SPAIN: October 19, 2007
MADRID - A Danish woman motorist was swept to her death on Wednesday by a flash flood on the Spanish island of Majorca, the region's government said on its Web site.
According to Spanish media, the 30-year-old woman abandoned her car and tried to escape the rising floodwaters after torrential rain near the town of Puigpunyent in the centre of the Balearic island. Two passengers in the vehicle, a man and a baby, were rescued. "We got the baby and the father out but not the woman," an emergency services spokesman told state television. "It appears the water carried her 200 or 300 metres downstream." The man and the child were unhurt apart from bruising, the newspaper el Mundo reported on its Web site.
