Schwarzenegger Halts Fishing After San Fran Spill |

SAN FRANCISCO - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger suspended all fishing in and around the San Francisco Bay on Tuesday after a container ship spilled 58,000 gallons (220,000 litres) of oil last week.

Crabbing season was scheduled to open on Thursday, but now fishing for human consumption has been canceled until at least Dec. 1. "Our priority must be getting the oil cleaned up as quickly as possible, rescuing all marine life and most importantly protecting the public health," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. The Cosco Busan container ship struck a fog-shrouded tower of the Bay Bridge on Nov. 7. The collision gouged the ship's hull and fuel spilled into the bay from a large hole. Since then, many San Francisco beaches have been closed and more than 500 birds have been found dead. According to the Coast Guard, workers have cleaned up 12,745 gallons of oil and another 4,060 gallons have evaporated. Officials are now concentrating on shoreline areas for the clean-up.
