The quake, at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 km), had its epicenter 137 miles (220 km) west northwest of Sibolga, Sumatra, Indonesia, USGS said.
Earlier on Saturday, a 6.4 magnitude quake rattled Indonesia's half of New Guinea island.
Located in a very active seismic region where several tectonic plates meet, Indonesia suffers frequent earthquakes.
