Reuters FACTBOX-Impact of Recent Floods in Southern Africa

Date: 09-Jan-08
Country: AFRICA

Here are some details on the damage caused by recent floods in the region.

* MOZAMBIQUE:

-- Floods killed 45 people and left 285,000 homeless in February-March 2007, after torrential rain and hurricanes swept through the country. Mozambique said in early March 2007 it needed nearly US$71 million to rebuild.

-- It was the worst flooding to hit Mozambique since 2000-2001, when 700 people died and another half a million were driven from their homes.

* ZAMBIA:

-- As many as 41 of Zambia's 73 districts were affected by floods which destroyed maize, cassava, sorghum and millet crops in March 2007. More than 1.4 million Zambians needed food after floods destroyed crops and left thousands of people without homes.

-- In 2003 about 1.1 million Zambians were left to rely on handouts from the UN's World Food Programme after floods destroyed maize crops.

* ANGOLA:

-- More than 110 people died in Angola and thousands were left homeless in the January 2007 flash floods and mudslides. Floods also left thousands without clean drinking water and access to sewage facilities causing a surge in cases of cholera. An average of 90 cases of the potentially fatal intestinal infection were reported each day in the province of Luanda.
