Sweden picks 10 towns for greenhouse gas cuts

The project is in line with Sweden's goal to curb climate change by cutting CO2 emissions by two percent during 1990-2010 and will stimulate institutions and companies to save energy by increasing efficient energy use, the agency said in a statement.
Another goal was to boost the use of renewable energy such as solar, wind, biomass and small hydropower, it said.
The agency said it would expand the project which had attracted some 70 applicants, should it prove successful.
The project adheres to the Kyoto global climate treaty which calls on most industrialised countries to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent by 2010.
Scientists believe that greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels, trap heat in the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.
