Reuters OECD ministers forum to focus on sustainable growth

Date: 10-May-01
Country: FRANCE

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said that environment and energy ministers would for the first time join the organisation's yearly meeting of finance and economy ministers.

The meeting is aimed at moving long-range environmental issues higher up the political agendas of member countries and at promoting a cross-disciplinary approach to those issues.

The ministers are expected to endorse a set of environmental objectives set out by the OECD as part of its three-year sustainable development project, OECD Secretary-General Donald Johnston told a news conference yesterday.

"The endorsement (of the objectives) would be very significant," he said.

The project's results will be presented in a report, although the section on global warming is still being worked on following the U.S. administration's rejection of the Kyoto protocol.

The OECD will also present a report analysing growth patterns during the 1990s and recommending strategies to boost countries' GDP per capita.

The organisation launched the growth study in 1999 to examine the boom in tech-led New Economy stocks. The report will also analyse the subsequent bursting of the tech bubble.
