Reuters Angry Bangladeshis kill tiger

Date: 21-Aug-00
Country: BANGLADESH

They said the tiger swam across a canal into a home in Christianpara village, killed the cows in a cattleshed and tried to pull them away. As the house owner tried to prevent them, the tiger killed him too, police told reporters.

In an hour-long fight, the villagers, armed with spears, choppers and sticks, seized the tiger and beat it to death.

Two villagers were injured in the battle, forest officials said.

They said tigers killed at least 25 people in the last one year, mostly wood cutters, fishermen and honey collectors.

The Sundarban, home to the Royal Bengal tigers, is one of the world's largest mangrove forests, stretching along a vast coastal belt in southern Bangladesh and India's West Bengal state.

There are more than 360 tigers in the Bangladesh part of the forest, the officials said.

Killing tigers is prohibited under Bangladesh's wildlife protection law.
