Moosa said the summit - to be held in Johannesburg on a date still to be set by the United Nations - would also focus on poverty alleviation, health and the emancipation of women.

"We are confident the summit will be a big success. It is a landmark conference," he told a news conference.

The summit would examine the impact of globalisation on development, energy, desertification and land degradation.

It will review progress since the ground-breaking Rio summit 10 years ago and plot the path to the future. This would include means to balance the relationship between the rich northern nations and the poorer developing southern hemisphere countries.

Moosa said the summit - officially titled the World Summit on Sustainable Development - was expected to attract more than 110 heads of state and government as well as more than 50,000 delegates.
