WASHINGTON - A 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck in the Queen Charlotte Islands region off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, on Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. local time (1530 GMT), the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake was centered 162 miles southwest of Prince Rupert at a depth of 6.2 miles, the USGS said.

The USGS initially reported the quake as 6.5 magnitude.
