Residents of the U.S. Northeast shivered through a severe blast of Arctic air and snow on Thursday, with temperatures from New York to Maine expected to drop to near-record lows by evening.
A five-inch (13-cm) blanket of snow grounded more than 100 flights at New York City airports and canceled school for children in parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. In New York, icy winds were expected to make it feel like 30 degrees below zero Fahrenheit (minus 34 C) by Thursday night.
