Chihuahua dogs bark during a PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) demonstration in central Rome July 30, 2004.

The activists protested against the abandoning of pets during summer holidays. The government this month passed a law which would slap Italians found guilty of abandoning their pets with prison terms of up to one year and fines of up to 10,000 euros ( $12,350).
