Week 49: I resolve to avoid giving throw-away batteries and battery-operated gifts this Christmas, to reduce resource wastage.
Date: 08-Dec-09
Most of us, especially the kids, receive at least one gift each year that requires batteries. Single-use or throw-away batteries are incredibly wasteful and have 20 times more impact on the environment than rechargeable batteries.
There are many ways I can reduce usage of throw-away batteries, including:
- avoiding buying or asking for gifts that are battery-operated,
- choosing presents that can also run off mains power
- buying gifts that are water, solar, wind or hand powered, including water-powered clocks, solar or hand powered torches or radios, solar mobile chargers and more.
- using and giving rechargeable batteries (and battery chargers) - which represent a better choice for the environment.
I can also look for options to recycle both single-use and rechargeable batteries by visiting RecyclingNearYou.com.au, or calling 1300 733 712.
