Green Resolutions

Week 6: I resolve to re-think the items I buy habitually, choosing fewer over-packaged or disposable products, so I can reduce the amount of packaging I throw out.

Date: 10-Feb-09

It’s easy to buy the same brands and products simply because that’s what I’ve always bought – but do my buying habits help or hinder the wellbeing of our environment?

I should consider the amount of excess packaging used, the recyclability of the packaging and the processes used in the production of my favourite brands.

Yoghurt is a good example of this.  Yoghurt in Number 2 plastic is fully recyclable in almost all council areas in Australia, whereas yoghurt in Number 6 plastic or packaging made from composite materials like plastic, cardboard and aluminium foil are more difficult or impossible to recycle. Gippsland Dairy Organic Yogurt is a good example of a product in fully recyclable packaging.

Next time I reach for something instinctively, I will take another look and make sure I’m giving the environment a helping hand.

I will re-think the items I buy habitually, choosing fewer over-packaged or disposable products, so I can reduce the amount of packaging I throw out.
