OTTAWA - China and other emerging economies must agree to binding limits on carbon emissions as part of any international climate agreement, the Canadian government said on Monday.
"Our position has been, going back to last year, that all major emitting economies, developed and developing, need to agree to binding commitments in any eventual agreement," a government official said in a briefing ahead of the Group of Eight meetings in the central Italian town of L'Aquila this week.
The issue will be discussed at the meeting, and will be a particular focus at the 17-member Major Economies Forum, which meets on the second day of the summit.
